Plans for a new passenger ferry service between Carteret, New Jersey, and Manhattan have reached another milestone. The final structural beam has been installed on Carteret’s new multimodal ferry terminal, which is currently under construction on the Arthur Kill waterfront.
The four-storey terminal is expected to be completed by early 2028. According to an official update from the Borough of Carteret, the planned service will initially make two or three stops in Manhattan, with three or four departures during both the morning and evening. Ferry operations could begin before the terminal building itself is completed.
Carteret is also expanding the fleet planned for the service. A $9.6 million grant from the US Federal Transit Administration will fund a third vessel, which is planned as an electric, low-emission ferry. Carteret already has one ferry, Theodore Roosevelt, while a second vessel is under construction in New Orleans. Delivery of the third ferry is expected around 2030.
The new terminal will connect ferry passengers with NJ Transit buses and other local transport services and will include around 700 parking spaces. Once operational, the ferry will provide a new direct public transport connection between central New Jersey and Manhattan, with destinations expected to include Wall Street, West 39th Street and the World Financial Center.
