The Canadian government is investing CAD 32 million in new infrastructure at the Souris ferry terminal on Prince Edward Island. The project will replace the terminal’s movable transfer bridge, which connects ferries to the shore and allows vehicles and passengers to board and disembark.
Transport Canada has awarded the contract to Dexter Construction. According to the official announcement from Transport Canada, design work will begin immediately, with construction expected to start later in 2026. The new transfer bridge is scheduled to be completed by summer 2028.
The Souris terminal serves the year-round ferry connection between Prince Edward Island and Cap-aux-Meules in Quebec’s Magdalen Islands. Around 135,000 passengers and 59,000 vehicles use the route each year. The service is also an important transport link for goods and supplies to the islands.
Ferry operations are expected to continue during construction. A fixed transfer bridge has already been installed to keep the terminal operational while the existing movable bridge is replaced. The new infrastructure is expected to be ready for use by summer 2028.
